Keeping the classic must-haves of leather, glass and metal aside, this home by Sumeesh Menon and Associates breaks the typical stereotype of a bachelor pad and brings in elegance and style by using designs that are understated and yet make a strong statement.
Elegance Personified
A very neutral colour palette in muted shades of greys, beiges and cool blues have helped to tie in the entire space together as an elegant man cave. “It was a 4-bed apartment which we have converted into a 2 bed and capitalised on each space to exude style and comfort in all possible ways. The focus of the home was to entertain guests, and that was kept in mind while designing each element,” shares Sumeesh Menon, Principal, Sumeesh Menon and Associates. Located in a premium residential building in Upper Juhu, Sumeesh’s focus for this home was to ensure it made a subtle design statement and reflected the personality of the owner.
The Retro Edge
As soon as one enters, the spacious den room with its larger-than-life 110” screen, and a cosy lounging sofa corner, catches your eye. Another corner is highlighted by the stylish looking custom bar unit with a retro style bar front design. The storage behind displays shutters covered in a very catchy retro collage art of pop artistes. Furniture pieces from Sources Unlimited and a custom sculptural floor lamp table add to the elegance of the space.
Entertainment Zone Exudes Charm
The den also encompasses a game area on one end which includes a cool poker table and a pool table. This corner has several features that add to the charm of the space, including a custom marble inlay pattern flooring beneath the pool table and a huge backlit wall clock installation on the wall behind the poker table. An entire wall displays a muted grey veneer panelling of old-world style moulding details, and a niche has been carved into a built-in library wall. “The larger-than-life bar, which we have custom designed, is our favourite. We collaborated with Alsorg for it and the end result is a breathtakingly beautiful yet very functional bar,” shares Sumeesh.
Profusion of Art
Retro art is one of the biggest features of the space, adding life and colour to the otherwise muted grey colour palette and minimalistic design of the home. The passage leading further inside also displays a splash of feminine retro artwork collage. The powder bathroom is an energetic and art inspired space where an entire wall is covered in a custom mosaic artwork and the ceiling is plastered in a custom collage wallpaper design of music artistes! The rest of the walls and floor are clad in a stunning white panda marble and even the stand-alone basin is a custom-made monolith marble model.
Bespoke Luxury
The master bedroom encompasses a cocoon-inspired sculptural headboard customised in woven leather that adds drama to this muted luxurious bedroom, complete with a plush walk-in wardrobe to add to its elegance. There is more retro artwork covering one wall along with sculptural design elements added alongside. The guest bedroom also displays a customised, vibrant tan leather headboard panelling and has a blend of modern furniture, including a chest of drawers and bedside tables with rivet details and a unique retro style moulding design with sculptural elements added to it. The track lights by Flos and the armchair by Minotti add a touch of modern design to the room. The bathrooms are again kept muted in a monochrome palette of marble with detailing added in the form of brass inlays and plush light fixtures.
This man cave is certainly a culmination of all things classy, even as the retro artworks and subtle yet luxurious design elements add to its uniqueness.
